I absolutely adore this store and have been a frequent shopper since we moved to the area last year. The staff are AMAZING! They are so sweet and accommodating and hugely helpful when finding books or toys. I buys all of my kids toys here and they LOVE this store. The selection is incredible and perfectly curated to have wonderful options for everyone (especially diverse selection of POC authors!). The owner is fantastic and has saved us TWICE when my son left his lovey in her store. She knows my name and is so kind every time we go. Honestly nothing beats supporting this incredible local business. This sweet women even put his lovey in a bag with my name on it when she found it because she recognize that it was my sons. 100 stars 🙌

Wonderful children's bookstore with lots of games and toys as well. Store is a delightful treasure trove of well selected books and toys. The staff are incredibly helpful and very knowledgeable. I have gone in with vague descriptions of my nieces' and nephews' interests, and each time they have helped me select the perfect book. They know my son well and direct him to the books and games he has loved the most. It's the first place I think of when getting something for my or other people's children.

Character Development is a charming bookstore aimed at kids. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The book selection is not enormous, but high quality and varied (catering to a broad range of interests -- they will also order anything). There is a nice selection of toys and games as well. Small, friendly, and high quality. My whole family loves character development.

If there were 6 stars, I would give it. Excellent toy/book store that is well worth the commute if you are not local. Knowledgeable, helpful staff that always save me in a pinch en route to a birthday party. Never got the side-eye when my toddler acts out or mishandles merchandise. If you need convincing to resist Amazon/support small business, this shop and it's staff will win you over.

This store has always been one of my favorites. I was there today after a long time away. It's still a great shop--I found many great books and a few cute little Easter basket items, but I have to say I was dismayed when I got to the counter and saw the sign that there are no returns or exchanges due to COVID. This is an unreasonable position for a business at this point in the pandemic. We know that the risk of infection from surfaces is low. Libraries are open. Others stores are open and accepting returns. If there is a great concern about this, implement a 3 day "quarantine" period for items that are returned like some libraries are doing. I like to buy gifts from Character Development. I don't want to buy a gift if the gift recipient can't exchange it in the event they already have it/don't like it etc. Today I would have bought my goddaughter many more books, but I was unwilling to do so since she couldn't exchange them if she already had them. I want to support small businesses, but I won't be supporting this one any longer as long as this policy remains in place.

I live in NYC and go out of my way to stop by Character Development whenever I’m near Philly. It’s my favorite children’s bookstore (with amazing toys and gifts too.) Just the right size -amazingly curated, great variety, yet not overwhelming.

I love this little store. I’ve had nothing but positive, friendly people there. I do not take my grandson in because he would want to play with everything and tear the store apart. It’s understandable that staff would be alert to that. I make that comment for the few comments i noticed complaining. I especially love the updated look! Go and visit this charming little store and support our local shops.
