Come to Beckley to enjoy coal miner karaoke with none other than Don the Icon!

Which such favorites as, "fun mun", "them bad boys gotta go" and "16 tons"

If you've been there and you're reading this; you know. If you don't know, "like them bad boys, you gotta go!"

But seriouusly, we initially found out about the Beckley Coal Mine tour while my wife was looking for things for us to do on Spring Break. Our kids were really into Minecraft and this seemed like a really cool thing to do for all of us. We saw a video of some other folks who visited and had Don as a tour guide and he looked like the exact type of person you want to have as a guide. Fun, engaging and someone who's passionate about what they're doing.

We were very fortunate to have Don as our guide when we went. It was complete coincidence and we are so grateful it worked out that way. Don was an incredible guide. He does a great job of telling the history of the mines, what life was like for the workers and their families and has fun for the whole family in the process. Don sparked a new interest in all things coal mining in our 16 year old daughter! (And she typically dislikes history; or so she thought)

Our group had ages 13, 16, 36 and 42 and we all had a good time.

Also, the merch was very affordable, especially compared to most places we visited. I got the grayish blue hoodie for under $40 and it's super soft and thick. My new favorite hoodie! (Sorry Las Vegas hoodie 🙁

Unrelated but interesting, we were also not the only visitors from Michigan to visit that day. The folks in the mine cart with us were also from Michigan (about 25 minutes from where we live) and there were other Michiganders that went in for a tour right after us!

Overall a wonderful experience that we highly recommend. Ask for Don!

Owned by the city of Beckley, this little historical town is a gem. The staff are super friendly, suppling the visitors with great period facts. The buildings are well maintained with lots of antiques.

We walked in and bought tickets on a Saturday and got in the tour that started 4 minutes later. Don was our tour guide and he was fantastic! He made sure everyone felt comfortable and included, he was especially good with the kids on our tour! The entire staff was friendly and passionate. There was a blacksmith there in the homestead working while we were there and he was super interesting and knowledgeable. Great stop while in the area and a break from the heat!
PS the fudge on sale here is some of the best fudge I've ever had.

My husband and I along with another couple camped at the campground for two nights. There is so much to see! The office/store had a coal mining museum upstairs. There was a section of the property with a homesteading exhibition with furnished log buildings that were over 100 years old with tour guides to tell you all about each one. There were other buildings on the site to tour but we ran out of time. We took an adventurous drive to the New Eiver Gorge and viewed the Red River Gorge Bridge. It is humungous! Then we drove around to some running creeks, rivers, Ann’s waterfalls. We hiked a short distance to a waterfall that was beautiful and sprayed us with fine mist. We returned to the campground just in time for the last train ride of the day through a real coal mine. Our tour guide, Gerald, was amazing! I learned things about mining that I had never heard before. It really was the highlight of staying there. We saw an awful lot for only having one full day there. The ladies on the office were quite friendly and informative as well.

This is a must see for anyone in the area. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable as he worked in a coal mine for decades. The tour would have been worth the money even if there wasn't a guide, but he really made the experience interesting and enlightening.

I cannot more highly recommend this tour. It was a long drive for us, but it was worth every minute. Are tour guide was fantastic. It brings a whole level of appreciation for how hard the coal miners job was. I am not a Union man, but I could sure see why they had to come into play. Hats off to these incredible workers. You've got to visit this!

This was a fantastic experience. The exhibits are first class and the mine tour was well done. If you want to get a real picture of Coal Mining history in the US, this is the place. Our tour guide, Gerald was in the coal mines for 40+ years and made the tour a great experience.
